Faith was forged in testing times

Blind to what's ahead

Memories and prophecies

Left so much unsaid

No regard for earthly ways

Odds against success

Yet they staked their heaven's claims

Against the world's excess

Adoration in the frost

Darkness set alight

Deep within their constant prayers

Hardship took to flight

Ocean winds filled every day

Cold stone for a bed

Yet their winter voices raised

The hopes of those ahead

Faith burns brightly in the storm

Embers in the gale

Hope will kindle in our hearts

Should our footsteps fail

We will never lose the way

With our waypoints marked

By those beacons flaming

Tinder-dry and Spirit-sparked

Rising now, as evening falls

Calling on the Christ

Word of God with human voice

Earth and heaven spliced

On those ancient shoulders now

Peering through the night

Advent lights still shining

From the past to guide our sight

Lights of Advent Past

A homage to the monks of Skellig Michael, whose faith and fortitude inspire us still. A song for Advent.
